The Dangers of Horse Floats and what to LOOK out for...

Our aim is to help make aware the dangers and stress to both Horses and Human caused by Floats found on Australian Roads.

This website contains graphic images of damaged horses and may be disturbing to some viewers.

Chest Bars

FINALLY!!!!!

Despite all the claims, this is the 1st and only quick release chest bar in Australia.

Injuries inflicted while being hung over a chest bar.

Anti Rear Safety Straps

Our Anti Rear Strap effectively eliminate the ability for a horse to get itself over a Chest Bar.

They are supplied by the aerospace industry and are the safest quick release fittings even under load. Australian vehicle seatbelts are NOT quick release under load.

Shoulder, Head and Centre Dividers

The safety improvements and practical options are too many to list here.

Go here for a detailed explanation of design, Horsemanship and Horse Safety.

Fixed head divisions and gaps left between the head and shoulder divisions can do a injury to horses.

Shoulder and head divisions can move
independently of the centre division and also
lock to the side of the float as not to swing freely.

Breeching Doors

The Breeching Doors on the Gainsborough have rounded edges, recessed locking systems and are spring loaded so they stay open and out of the way, ensuring no horse will get caught when loading and unloading.

Breeching Door Damage

Breeching doors with sharp edges and angle iron locking systems can do this or worse.

Ceilings, Rounded Roof  Framework
and extra height.

The Gainsborough has the choice of a ceiling or rounded roof framework behind the horses head to help prevent “scalping” of your horse in the event it hits its head on the roof. With extra height in our floats even the tallest horses can have adequate headroom.

Go here to read about height.

Flush Fitting Ramp Latches, Door Latches and Filled in "A Frames" and Outriggers

Can horses get caught up and injured on these popular fittings?

Recessed Framework

Rounded edges

These horses were both caught on ramp latches

This horse caught its foot under
ramp fittings while the ramp was down.

Injuries like this cut lip are caused by
fitting such as exposed interior door locks.

Flush Fittings, Flared Ramps,
Filled in "A Frames" and Outriggers.
One piece rounded mudguards
and running boards are all safety
features that should help
prevent injuries to horses.

Spot the dangers... this is just one float...

    • Centre division back leg where a horse can get caught and trip on it

    • Rubber on the Walls, so that a horse can get grip on them and climb the walls, tear the rubber off while the horse continues to rip itself apart on what remains of the fastenings hanging out of the wall

    • Dangerous Ramp springs hanging off the side of the ramp are a recipe for a horse to get caught

    • Breeching chains allow a horse to duck underneath and potentially skin it’s whole top line or worse.

Have you had a good look at your float recently and spotted the dangers?
Please feel free to contact us regarding changes to potentially dangerous fittings in your existing float, this will be a new step to “seeing it through the eyes of the horse".
